After the Christmas and new year festivities I found that my body struggled to get back into a routine, no matter how determined my mind was. Sometimes at the beginning of the year, our thoughts and ideas are ready and raring to go, but the body is not quite ready for it.

So with this, I found that even though I was now eating well and exercising, I was getting some bloat and digestive discomfort. I’m not going to lie, I do feel a little self conscience when this happens, but the most annoying thing is how bloody uncomfortable it can be.

Here are some tips on how I tackle bloating and digestive issues when they strike! if you have any more tips on bloating and digestive discomfort, please drop them in the comments below to help others and I’m always looking for new things to try :)

  • Drink peppermint tea and hot lemon water. Warming drinks can be soothing for the digestive system and, umm…. get things moving!

  • Belly massage and dry body brushing in clockwise direction. This stimulates blood flood to the area and is relaxing, which can help the body begin to digest.

  • Drink more water. Goes without saying really, but even more important when you’re bloated to give the body what it needs to run smoothly.

  • Take magnesium and potassium. These two minerals are needed for digestion and have been an absolute game changer for me.

  • Do a fast between 18-24hr. It might be that your digestive system needs a break, 18-24hrs is just a guide. I also read that you could maybe just fast until you go to the toilet properly to ensure you’re not adding more food to the problem.

  • Wear something that makes you feel comfortable and lovely. This is a big one! Our gut directly effects our mood, so it’s really easy to feel down and crap about yourself when bloated or uncomfortable. Put on your comfiest clothes or something that you know looks lovely with or without a bloat on. Do you hair, paint your nails etc. These tiny things might just help you feel a little better.

  • Deep belly breaths at every opportunity. Stressing about how bloated and uncomfortable you are is only going to add to the problem. Take big deep breaths and focus on each one, this will help you tap into the parasympathetic nervous, our ‘rest & digest’ response… clue is in the name ;)

  • Twisty yoga postures and hugging knees to belly. I have a short yoga sequence here designed to help aid digestion and ease bloating.

  • Take apple cider vinegar diluted in water. It’s said that apple cider vinegar can help ease bloating as it has digestive enzymes which can help out our system. I take this everyday.

  • Try and get an extra hours sleep. Stress and tiredness can contribute to bloating and digestive issues, as the body is in the ‘fight or flight’ side of our nervous systems, so it is not concentrating on digesting food. Taking a relaxing bath and getting some extra sleep might just be enough to calm the nervous system and ease you into ‘rest and digest’.
